
How a Tiered Master Key System Actually Works — and Why the Mortise Lock Is Central to It
A master key system is built on a concept called a 'change key and master key' hierarchy. At the base of the pyramid, each individual key — called a change key or tenant key — opens exactly one lock and nothing else. One level up, a sub-master key opens all locks within a defined zone, such as a single floor or department. Above that, a grand master key (or great-grand master, in large facilities) opens every lock in the system. This architecture is not magic; it is precision engineering inside the lock cylinder itself, using a technique called 'master wafer' or 'master pin' insertion that allows a second shear line to form when a master key is inserted.
The mortise lock is the hardware backbone of this kind of system in any serious commercial installation. Unlike a cylindrical door knob lock, a mortise lock is set into a pocket (the mortise) cut into the door edge, giving it a much larger case that houses a deadbolt, latch, and often an anti-kick plate as a single integrated unit. This robust body accommodates the high-security cylinder formats — SFIC (Small Format Interchangeable Core) and LFIC (Large Format Interchangeable Core) — that make re-keying individual positions within a master key hierarchy fast and damage-free.
